South East Asia – the biggest development in the Zoo’s history

We are creating a grand design home for our South East Asian wildlife – and a world-class immersive experience for everyone who visits. 

As the most ambitious project in its 95-year history, South East Asia reflects a part of the world that has been a strong focus for our Zoo. As one of the most species-rich and threatened places on earth, it has huge conservation issues and challenges, and the Zoo has been very active in supporting conservation efforts in this region.

The development is part of our ten-year $120 million ‘Future Zoo’ development programme.

The South East Asia development will transform the look and feel of almost a fifth of our Zoo

We have created an expansive new home for our orangutans nad siamang gibbons, and are working on the new habitat for our tigers and otters. A large, transparent, climate-controlled tropical dome is a standout feature. Reflective of an Indonesian swamp forest, it will feature a diversity of freshwater reptile and fish species - and be a wonderful warm place for visitors to enjoy in winter.

Te Puna 

As part of our Future Zoo transformation, we have a new restaurant and function venue overlooking the central lake and new wetlands area. With great hospitality and beautiful interiors, this space delivers a true Zoo dining and event experience. Visitors will enjoy orangutans and gibbons ranging and exploring from above via special climbing structures in their rainforest home.
